Seeing Colors During Acupuncture? What Your Body & Mind Are Telling You

If you’ve ever relaxed on an acupuncture table, closed your eyes, and suddenly noticed vivid shades of purple, blue, gold, or pink washing over your mind’s eye—you’re not alone.

While most people expect acupuncture to feel like a deeply relaxing nap or a subtle tingling sensation, some patients report seeing distinct colors or glowing shapes during their treatment.

It can feel surprising, but it is actually a fascinating physiological response. Here is a look at what causes this phenomenon from both a nervous system perspective and through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

What Causes You to “See Colors” During Treatment?

When acupuncture needles are gently inserted into specific points, your body undergoes a shift in how it processes nervous system signals and circulation. Seeing colors usually stems from two main drivers:

1. A Shift in Your Nervous System

Modern living keeps many of us stuck in a subtle state of “fight or flight” (the sympathetic nervous system). Acupuncture triggers a rapid shift into the “rest and digest” state (the parasympathetic nervous system).

As your heart rate slows, your breathing deepens, and brainwave activity shifts from alert Beta waves to calm Alpha and Theta waves, your brain processes visual and sensory information differently. This deep relaxation can awaken subtle visual responses, similar to the sensations experienced right before falling asleep.

2. Micro-Circulation & Retinal Changes

Acupuncture improves blood flow and releases natural neurotransmitters like endorphins and GABA. This change in circulation can alter light processing in the retina and visual cortex, turning subtle light or eye-relaxation patterns into vivid colors and halos.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Perspective

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, vision and colors are intimately connected to the movement of Qi (vital energy), Blood, and the health of your internal organ systems (Zang-Fu).

When a needle unblocks stagnation or balances energy, that movement can manifest visually. In TCM theory, different colors often correlate with the Five Elements and their corresponding organs:

Color Element Associated Organs & Emotions What It Often Signals
Blue / Green Wood Liver & Gallbladder (Stress, Flexibility, Growth) Unwinding trapped tension, soothing stress, or smoothing constrained Qi.
Pink / Red Fire Heart & Small Intestine (Joy, Spirit, Warmth) Calming the Shen (Spirit), expanding circulation, and restoring emotional warmth.
Yellow / Gold Earth Spleen & Stomach (Grounding, Harmony, Thought) Center, digestion, and grounding restless thoughts into clarity.
White / Silver Metal Lung & Large Intestine (Grief, Release, Clarity) Letting go of old emotional weight and clearing the breath.
Black / Dark Purple Water Kidney & Bladder (Fear, Deep Reserve, Willpower) Accessing deep-seated reserves, clearing old fears, or releasing systemic exhaustion.

Clinical Case Study: Releasing Stagnant Energy

To understand how this works in practice, consider a patient who came in carrying long-held, deep-seated emotional trauma. During her treatment using calming and grounding points, her nervous system underwent a remarkable visual progression:

  • The Black Color: She initially saw a dark, heavy black color. In TCM, black corresponds to the Water element and Kidneys, which store deep reserves and hold fear or trauma. Physiologically, this represents the body’s “freeze” response.
  • The Release: As the treatment progressed and her energy settled, she observed the black color literally drift out through the door of the treatment room. This is a powerful psychological and neurological phenomenon known as somatic externalization—where the brain visualizes the physical discharge of heavy, trapped energy leaving the body.
  • The Shift to Blue & Pink: Once the dark energy cleared, her vision shifted to blue (Wood element—the movement and unblocking of Qi) and finally settled on a round, warm pink halo (Fire element—calming the Shen/Spirit and restoring a sense of safety and heart-centered warmth).

When she opened her eyes, the transformation was complete. Her body had moved out of defense mode and into a state of deep integration and relief.

What Should You Do If You See Colors?

Nothing at all! Simply observe it with curiosity.

Seeing colors is a safe, gentle, and positive sign that your nervous system is dropping its defenses and allowing the treatment to work deeply. It means your body is listening, shifting, and letting go of what no longer serves it.
